B.A. in Philosophy, UC Berkeley
Sheila Vatan graduated with a B.A. in philosophy from UC Berkeley in the spring of 2007. In the last years of her study, she developed a particular interest in international relations, U.S. foreign policy, and political philosophy. She hopes to devote more time and attention to these and related subjects in an academic arena. At the USC Center on Public Diplomacy, she is regularly involved in research and contributes to the Center’s Wiki. Her interests in public diplomacy lie in the areas of nation-branding, rhetoric and framing, media, and soft power in developing countries.
Sheila’s particular interests are multi-faceted and varied. During coursework at UC Berkeley, she explored issues of power from both a philosophical and anthropological perspective, investigated women’s issues in the context of globalization, and examined stereotyping of the Middle East. She also engaged her community through peer outreach and education programs. She speaks English and Persian, and hopes to extend her language abilities.
In the future, Sheila looks forward to furthering her studies and gaining a deeper understanding of diverse peoples and nations and the ways in which they interact.
