C) WEEKLY EXCHANGES SUPPLEMENT The following articles are related to educational and cultural exchange programs. Specific topics in this supplement include USG-funded exchange programs (e.g., Fulbright scholarships, Ron Brown Fellowship, International Visitors) as well as issues relating to student visas, study abroad, and NGOs involved in exchanges. The articles are aggregated weekly by STACY MICHELLE GLASSGOLD, USC CENTER ON PUBLIC DIPLOMACY. C.1) USG–FUNDED EXCHANGE PROGRAMS (SCROLL DOWN TO SECTION C.2 FOR OTHER TOPICS) 1. UC SANTA CRUZ BIOLOGIST RECEIVES FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AWARD (UCSC NEWS, JUNE 23RD 2005): Ingrid Parker, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach and do research at the University of Panama during the 2005-06 academic year. The grant will support Parker’s work on a project titled “Applied plant ecology in Panama: Building intellectual capital and assessing the impact of ‘genetic pollution’ in a tropical forest tree.” LINK 2. GRADUATE STUDENT CHOSEN AS FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR, NICOLETA LAURA CISMAS (BG NEWS, JUNE 21ST 2005): Bowling Green State University student Sarah Marie Ford is the first University undergraduate student ever to receive a Fulbright Scholarship and one of the five students from the United States chosen to go to Russia as an English teaching assistant. LINK 3. SIOX FALLS NATIVE EARNS FULBRIGHT AWARD (ARGUS LEADER, JUNE 24TH 2005): Taun N. Toay of Sioux Falls, who recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Bard College in New York, has been awarded a U.S. Student Fulbright Award to study economics at the University of Pireas in Greece. Toay said his studies and research will focus on isolating the inflationary effects of the euro on the Greek economy. LINK 4. FULBRIGHT AWARDED TO HOFFMAN ESTATES NATIVE, MICHAEL PUENTE (DAILY HERALD, JUNE 24TH 2005): Jennifer Sadoff, a native of Hoffman Estates and doctoral student at the University of North Texas in Denton near Dallas, was named a Fulbright scholarship winner this week for graduate study and research abroad. Through the scholarship, Sadoff plans to conduct research on the work of 20th-century music theorist Heinrich Schenker at the University of Vienna in Austria. LINK C.2) OTHER NEWS ON EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE ISSUES 5. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN CREATES JOINT INSTITUTE WITH SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY (U of M News, June 23rd 2005): The University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) signed a sweeping agreement to expand and institutionalize the exchange of engineering education between the two universities. LINK 6. US ISSUES MORE VISAS TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, ADAM HINES (PURDUE EXPONENT, JUNE 22ND 2005): While all international students face difficulties in receiving and maintaining their visas, Chinese students seemingly have faced the most. However, On Monday the United States began issuing more visas to first-time Chinese students. Purdue President Martin Jischke, who has been an ardent supporter of lifting student visa restrictions on the People’s Republic of China, said that the effects of the new policy decision should be immediately felt at Purdue, which has the third largest international student body in the nation. SECURITY ISSUES THREATEN SCIENCE FIELD (SCI-TECH TODAY, JUNE 22ND 2005): Some restrictive security measures in place to protect the United States from terrorism are having a detrimental effect on the scientific community, as foreign students and researchers are choosing to study elsewhere to avoid potential visa problems, the American Civil Liberties Union reported. LINK 8. VISA FEES INCREASES WILL COST THE UK MILLIONS IN LOST REVENUE, THEODORE KOUMELIS (TRAVEL DAILY NEWS, INTERNATIONAL JUNE 22ND 2005): The Tourism industry has united behind calls for a review of visas fees after UK visas increased the cost of multiple entry visas by almost 40% and student visas by 136% without warning or consultation. TAIPEI EXPECTS GREATER CROSS-STRAITS CULTURAL EXCHANGES (CRI, JUNE 24TH 2005): A senior official of Taipei’s municipal government has expressed his hope for increased cross-strait cultural exchange, despite current political factors. LINK 10. AMERICAN COMPANIES PRACTICE CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP IN GULF, CHRIS THORNTON (US DEPT OF STATE, JUNE 23RD 2005): In activities ranging from cleaning beaches to teaching business ethics to sponsoring student exchanges, American companies have engaged in activities in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) that make them true corporate citizens. LINK 11. STRONG BOND OF FRIENDSHIP (GULF DAILY NEWS, JUNE 27TH 2005): Bahrain’s Pakistani community is already celebrating as Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa begins his first official visit to their country today. The visit is being heralded as a milestone in strengthening the already strong ties between two Muslim countries. LINK 12. INDONESIA & SINGAPORE INCREASE CULTURAL EXCHANGE (VNA, JUNE 26TH 2005): Indonesia and Singapore have signed an educational cooperation agreement covering all levels from primary to tertiary education. LINK 13. DAYS OF KOREAN CULTURE IN AZERBAIJAN COMMENCED (AZERTAG, JUNE 27TH 2005): Days of Korean Culture have commenced on June 26 in the Azerbaijan capital city with organizing of the Friends of Azeri Culture Foundation and Azerbaijani-Korean Cultural Exchange Association ‘SEBA”. LINK 14. BG WRESTLERS PRIMED FOR TRIP TO POLAND, AL STILLEY (THE SOUTHSIDE TIMES, June 23RD 2005): Beech Grove wrestlers Michael McIntire and Eddie Mobley will be traveling to Warsaw, Poland as members of Team Indiana and the Beech Grove Wrestling Club. The trip is a cultural exchange program under the auspices of the Indiana State Wrestling Association (ISWA), an affiliate of USA Wrestling. LINK
