Public Diplomacy and the Beijing Olympics: Narratives and Counter Narratives
April 1, 2008 – Present

This CPD Media Monitor follows media coverage of events surrounding the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The Monitor is intended to highlight narrative differences between Chinese press and international English language press.

By providing a comparison between the Chinese Olympic narrative and the international media’s Olympic narrative, the Beijing Olympics Media Monitor will shed light on China’s public diplomacy and the effect of these efforts on what stories are told outside of China.

The Beijing Olympics Media Monitor focuses on narratives and news stories within five main areas of interest:

Human Rights: This section will review the role of the Beijing Olympics in drawing attention to issues such as Tibet and Darfur. Articles concerning the torch relay appear in this section.
Local News Coverage / International News Coverage

Environmental Issues: This section will review coverage of environmental activism and growing awareness of air and water pollution, big dams, drought and desertification, and natural disaster in the context of the Olympics.
Local News Coverage / International News Coverage

Culture: This section will review Olympic coverage that showcases Chinese culture and cultural exchange through sport, e.g. the architecture of Olympic buildings, the festivities surrounding the Olympics, and stories of athletes’ experiences.
Local News Coverage / International News Coverage

Chinese Power: This section will review issues of nationalism, the economy, and security of the Beijing Olympics, and how these issues project China's strengths and weaknesses to both local and international audiences.

Media: This section will review issues of media access, media bias, and stories explicitly about the role of the media throughout the Olympic games.
