The American Music Abroad program is designed to communicate America’s rich contributions to the global music scene as it fosters cross-cultural communication and people-to-people connections to global audiences. Today, American Voices is proud to administer the American Music Abroad program on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for the 2012-2013 touring season. To project the full spectrum of the American musical landscape, any talent representing characteristically American musical genres were invited to apply for the American Music Abroad program. This included, but was not limited to Blues, Bluegrass, Cajun, Country, Folk, Latin, Native American, Gospel, Hip Hop, Indie Rock, Jazz,…... Full Text

“Five million Kurds in Iraqi Kurdistan have become a beacon of light for the 35 million Kurds who live in Turkey, Syria, and Iran. That beacon of light is keeping us awake at night and is filling our hearts with hope.” -Kani Xulam, Director of the American-Kurdish Information Network For marginalized or underepresented states, public diplomacy is a key component of drawing global public attention to the cause. For Iraqi Kurdistan, public diplomacy represents a vital area of outreach in bringing awareness to “the Kurdish Question.” While working on a project on the public diplomacy of national movements, I had…... Full Text

"Out beyond ideas of right and wrong there is a field. I'll meet you there." -Rumi In the subcontinent, there is really only one religion that unites India, Pakistan and Bangladesh: cricket. With India’s dethroning the three-time consecutive champs Australia, and with Pakistan’s victory over the West Indies, the stage is set for a raucous match between India and Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup semi-finals. Cricket has a long history as a platform for diplomacy and public diplomacy between India and Pakistan. Cricket diplomacy in the Indo-Pak context made its appearance in 1987. Amid a period of rising tension…... Full Text
