Questions Remain About McHale’s Public Diplomacy Strategy
CPD Blog
I thought we elected a new president in 2008. The Business Insider
The closure of Google.cn will damage China, from discrediting its soft power campaign to rattling foreign businesses to upsetting a key constituency of educated and white-collar Chinese. Google is naive if they think they can close or force the closure of Google.cn and still retain any sort of a positive relationship with the Chinese government.  Read more...

Exchanging Culture: Japanese teens get a taste of life as Modesto students
The Modesto Bee
Japanese teenagers Ayano Imamura and Ryuki Tomita were surprised to learn that U.S. high schools let students choose some of their classes. They also liked how some students are eager to answer teachers' questions, unlike in their homeland. Ayano and Ryuki were among 18 students from Kyoto, Japan, who have been visiting Modesto for three weeks as part of a foreign exchange program.  Read more...

World Politics Review
One of my other co-panelists this week, pollster Craig Charney, noted that in many parts of the world, people would still prefer that the U.S. take the lead in shaping the global order, as opposed to China. The window still is open -- but for how much longer?  Read more...

Biden visit exposed Israeli settler truths
The Guardian
What provided this episode with refreshing clarity was the way in which it exposed the deeper dynamics that are driving contemporary Israeli realities. Israel's leadership scrambled to summon their best explanations and apologies – the decision was insensitive, ill-timed, a local initiative, and a mere technical planning detail.  Read more...

Clinton’s poor diplomatic scans
The Boston Globe
Such [PD] efforts assume that even the most wary foreigners may be brought around to like, or at least understand, America. That alluring hypothesis was found wanting when a group of six Pakistani legislators took umbrage at being asked to undergo a full-body scan last Sunday at Ronald Reagan National Airport.  Read more...
