Citizen diplomats help restore the American brand

Graham is one of several expert speakers who will address a conference titled "Global Competence in the 21st Century" on Oct. 23 at the Rochester Institute of Technology Inn and Conference Center. The conference will explore the role of "citizen diplomacy," especially the role of business. The premise is that in a changing and smaller world, ordinary citizens and businesses play an increasingly important role in diplomacy — in building and sustaining productive and friendly relationships with other countries. Joint Georgian - Russian Commission Formed in Baku

With the mediation by the Azeri non-governmental sector, a permanent Georgian-Russian commission was set up in Baku last week. The latest developments in Georgia provoked bitter diplomatic crisis between politicians. So, the founders of the commission believe public diplomacy could be engaged, and say that people themselves should settle Georgia-Russia relations.

National Presidents’ Initiative Proposed to Address Global Diplomacy

To dramatically improve international relations throughout the world, the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy (U.S. Center) announced today a National Presidents' Initiative for Citizen Diplomacy. The National Presidents' Initiative was launched as a result of discussions by 40 U.S. leaders, associated with more than 90 organizations in international affairs, who attended a Leadership Forum on Citizen Diplomacy. A National Presidents' Initiative Steering Committee plans to meet with members of the U.S. Center's Board, forum participants, nationally recognized leaders in foreign affairs, members of Congress, members of the new administration's transition team on foreign policy, and with the president-elect in early December to discuss this strategic plan and its implementation.  Read more...

German-Russian Dialogue Forum Meets Under Caucasus Cloud

In such times, according to Suslow, civilian dialogue is even more necessary given that government contacts can become strained. "The civilian dialogue -- between entrepreneurs, scientists, journalists, human rights activists -- makes it possible for both sides to come closer together from their different positions, because these difficulties are talked about in detail on several levels," said Suslow. "Without this non-political dialogue Russia cannot be understood in Europe. "The times in which governments decide on foreign policy alone are in the past, according to Alexander Rahr, a member of the German team at the Forum. Chinese dissident tipped to win Nobel peace prize

This year's Nobel peace prize could be awarded to a Chinese dissident to highlight China's human rights record in the wake of the Olympic Games, according to experts who closely follow the workings of the award. Experts said the Norwegian Nobel committee, the secretive five-strong body that awards the prize yearly, would see the passing of the Olympic Games as an opportunity to highlight China's human rights record, especially in a year marking the 60th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights.   Read more...
