Partnering to Strengthen Labs in Liberia
U.S. Africa Command
Captain Gabrielle Caldara, of USARAF's command surgeon's office and Major Mike Walter of USAMRU-K joined for a weeklong partnership in Monrovia, Liberia. Their goal was to assess the AFL's laboratory needs to look for ways that U.S. Army medical personnel can help their Liberian counterparts, Caldara said.

An opportunity to de-militarize public diplomacy

Last week, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) convened the third annual Magharebia.com Writers Workshop. According to AFRICOM public affairs, the event "introduced new media tools and technologies while stressing the importance of sound journalistic principles for writing, blogging and podcasting."

If we want to see democracy in developing nations, we need to help them to reposition themselves – by promoting trade, boosting tourism, and winning allies diplomatically. That can only be done by skilled communications, promoting the best aspects of these nations to the stakeholders that matter.

 AFRICOM: The American Military and Public Diplomacy in Africa
As part of its investigation into hard power and public diplomacy the USC Center on Public Diplomacy co-hosted a conference on AFRICOM. The proceedings of this conference were published as was the policy brief presented in Washington D.C. in March 2008. The Center continues to maintain an active Media Monitor that follows international media coverage of the U.S. military command.

 AFRICOM: The American Military and Public Diplomacy in Africa
Officials of the Defense and State departments cite a commitment to public diplomacy as an essential element of AFRICOM, the U.S. military command for Africa created in 2007. Questions remain, however, about whether a military command can and should engage in public diplomacy. This was the central issue at the conference about AFRICOM held at the University of Southern California in February 2008.
