Clinton Building Ties With Angola

Hillary Rodham Clinton made the first visit to Angola by a U.S. secretary of state in seven years, trying Sunday to strengthen relations with a growing oil producer that is being aggressively courted by China. Clinton sought to emphasize the positive in her two-day visit, praising Angola's efforts to rebuild after a 27-year civil war that ended in 2002. But during a meeting in parliament, opposition politicians urged her to press for more democratic behavior from President José Eduardo dos Santos, who has been in power for three decades.   Read more...

State Assures Muslims of Protection

The fight against terrorism will not undermine the rights of Muslims, a sessional paper recently presented to the Kenya Cabinet says. The paper introduces a new concept known as cultural diplomacy, which is the linchpin of public diplomacy. Earlier this year, a community radio station in Minneapolis asked Voice of America for permission to retransmit its news coverage on the increasingly volatile situation in Somalia. 90% - Clinton’s Warm Welcome in Kenya

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton begins a seven-nation trip to Africa today in Kenya where she is sure to receive a warm welcome from a country that has a very positive opinion of America. Fully 90% of Kenyans have a favorable opinion of the U.S., the highest favorability rating from any country polled in the 25-nation survey by the Pew Global Attitudes Project.  Read more...

AFRICOM: The American Military and Public Diplomacy in Africa
As part of its investigation into hard power and public diplomacy the USC Center on Public Diplomacy co-hosted a conference on AFRICOM. The proceedings of this conference were published as was the policy brief presented in Washington D.C. in March 2008. The Center continues to maintain an active Media Monitor that follows international media coverage of the U.S. military command.
AFRICOM: The American Military and Public Diplomacy in Africa
Officials of the Defense and State departments cite a commitment to public diplomacy as an essential element of AFRICOM, the U.S. military command for Africa created in 2007. Questions remain, however, about whether a military command can and should engage in public diplomacy. This was the central issue at the conference about AFRICOM held at the University of Southern California in February 2008.
