After participating in similar clinics in Korea and Israel in recent years, [La Lakers guard Jordan] Farmar says those experiences reminded of what led him to play basketball when he was a kid. "You can use sports to bridge gaps," Farmar said. "That's big, whether that's in America, Asia or Israel. People can get kids connected together through sports. A country may be at war, but that doesn't mean their people can't high-five each other."

Chinese Advocates Visit Law School On Grant

A $350,000 federal grant from the U.S. State Department will bring 18 young Chinese professionals to the South Royalton campus for a six-week educational and cultural exchange. The visit, according to program director and VLS professor Tseming Yang, will equip Chinese advocates and activists with new tools to fight environmental degradation in their native country.

Strategies of Dissent Evolving in Burma

Call it the evolutionary school of revolution. After years of brutally suppressed street protests, many Burmese have adopted a new strategy that they say takes advantage of small political openings to push for greater freedoms. They are distributing aid, teaching courses on civic engagement and quietly learning to govern. "We are trying to mobilize people by changing their thought process," said an entrepreneur in the city of Mandalay who is setting up classes on leadership. He added half in jest, "Civil society is a guerrilla movement."

Chengdu has been applauded as the Chinese city with the most "soft power" after beating a number of mainland cities - including Hangzhou, Dalian and Kunming - to secure the title. In recent years "soft power" has become an increasingly important factor in the success or failure of a city or region, in terms of both satisfying the needs of its residents and in attracting external support from the commercial sector.

China Raises 310 Million Yuan for Taiwan’s Storm Victims
The China Post
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming called for Chinese people around the world via a televised message Thursday to contribute to post-Typhoon Morakot relief efforts to help victims of the storm in Taiwan. At least 310 million Chinese yuan (US$45 million) were raised for the victims.
