ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible to participate in the Institute, you must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited university and have a minimum of five years of experience in the field of or related to public diplomacy. Fluency in spoken and written English is also a necessity for the program as all participants are expected to actively take part in class discussions based on the assigned readings and their own experience.
For inquiries about program eligibility, please contact Lisa Larsen at pdsummer@usc.edu.
HOW TO APPLY
The electronic application for the Summer Institute can be found on the USC Center on Public Diplomacy website
(http://uscpublicdiplomacy.org/index.php/about/summer).
All applications must be submitted online via this system.
The deadline to apply for the 2008 Summer Institute is Friday, April 18, 2008.
The deadline for payment and securing USC housing is Monday, June 2, 2008.
You can expect notification of your acceptance into the program on Friday, May 2, 2008.
Graduate students who have been admitted to the one-year Master’s in Public Diplomacy may register for the Summer Institute by registering for course PubD 500 through the USC Web Registration system
(https://my.usc.edu/portal/welcome.html). If all enrollment paperwork has been submitted to the Annenberg School and has been processed, students may log on to their student accounts through the MyUSC portal using their email address and password. Students whose paperwork has not yet been processed will need to obtain a Permit to Register through Annenberg Student Services.
Limited Status Students
Graduate students who wish to receive credit for the course, but are not affiliated with the USC Master of Public Diplomacy program are considered ‘limited status students.’ Limited status enrollment allows persons who have not been admitted to the university to take a limited number of courses at USC. Eligibility requirements listed on the first page of this document still apply.
To enroll as a limited status student once you have been accepted to the program, you must fill out a Permit to Register and Request for Student Program, which can be found online at http://www.usc.edu /dept/ARR/private/forms/Limited_Status_Registration_Form.pdf. Once you have completed and signed both sides of the form, mail the original, hard-copy document to the Center on Public Diplomacy (see contact information on the last page). In order to ensure that you will be registered on time, we must receive this form no later than Friday, July 11, 2008.
There is a 12-unit enrollment cap on limited status students. Please note that this option is not available to students who have been denied admission to the department offering the course. Check with the registrar of your home institution to inquire about transferring credits.
Additionally, limited status enrollment does not fulfill the requirements for issuing a student visa. International students (students studying or wishing to study in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa) must have the approval of the Office of Admission (JHH 218A on the University Park campus) before registering for the course.
Please note that the visa processing time varies by country and can take up to 60 days, so if you will be studying with a visa please plan accordingly.
TUITION
Tuition for the Summer Institute is $5,500 per person. The Institute offers reduced tuition rates for two or more persons from the same organization or ministry.
For questions regarding group rates, please contact Lisa Larsen at pdsummer@usc.edu.
VISAS
Who needs a visa?
Non-Americans and those without green cards who wish to participate in the Summer Institute must obtain J-1 Scholar status at the University and apply for an Exchange Visitor Visa. If you will need a visa, you will be required to pay the appropriate fees.
How do you obtain a visa?
The USC Center on Public Diplomacy will provide you with all of the necessary documents, but you will need to check details for the submission of visas at the closest U.S. embassy.
Please note that visa processing periods vary greatly by country, so early application to the program and early application for a visa are strongly recommended.
