Africa Command Begins its Premier Security Cooperation Conference

The interagency representation at the conference also points to how Africa Command continues to be a listening and learning organization, Ward added. "This is a team effort...this helps us understand the environment in a more effective way and how we can do our very best to ensure that our programs are coordinated and synchronized in a way that brings coherency to the totality of our efforts to help bring stability to the African continent."

Amnesty International: Embracing Human Rights: Islamists Renouncing Violence

Why should we care about the human rights of people who themselves don't appear to respect them? Statements made this week by a former member of an armed Islamic group suggest that it is the best way to change hearts and minds. In an interview in the British newspaper the Independent, Maajid Nawaz, discusses his life in a radical Islamic group...it was in prison, he told British journalist Johann Hari, where he had his deepest beliefs challenged.

India sends most students to US as Americans look to India

India sent over 103,000 students to the US in 2008-09, the maximum number from any country, a new survey said. At the same time, India became one of the favourite destinations of American students. According to the Open Doors 2009 survey by the Institute of International Education released Monday, India remains the leading place of origin for the eighth consecutive year, increasing by nine percent to 103,260.

Botswana:  U.S. Gives Old Palapye Church a Facelift

The American embassy in Gaborone is contributing $44,000 for the renovation of a colonial church at Old Palapye, present day Malaka. The aim is to restore the church built in 1890s to its original state...they will be empowering the people of Malaka to form a community trust through which the heritage site will be managed in a profitable fashion.
