Tehran again sees protests and violence

Students defied government warnings and the forced closure of some universities to gather at Tehran and Sharif universities, the Iranian capital’s main campuses. Riot police closed down the city center and assaulted groups wherever they gathered. Grainy videos streaming out of the Iranian capital on YouTube and Facebook showed gas mask-wearing demonstrators jumping over trash fires as they fled from security forces.

Obama’s Nowruz Message, Take Two

Late last night — morning in Tehran; and the 30th anniversary of the revolutionary storming of the U.S. embassy there — President Obama issued a statement to Iran reminiscent of his Nowruz message to the Iranian people seeking a better relationship. After months of official rebuff; a massive domestic uprising in Iran that continues; and intensified recent intransigence on nuclear diplomacy, this message is somewhat less patient.

utumn has been a busy -- if not dizzying -- period for Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Turkey is attempting a drastic diplomatic make-over, one that would transform Ankara into a regional power broker. On October 10, Davutoglu was in Switzerland, putting his signature on a historic deal that paves the way for restoring diplomatic ties with Armenia and for the two countries to take a look at their mutually contested history.

Do-it-yourself video and YouTube are the new media of choice for the YMCA`s Global Teens program, as of last night`s premiere of 10 short videos at the first Global Teens Film Festival at the West Side YMCA`s Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater. The videos-shot, conceived and directed by 12 participants of this summer`s nine Global Teens excursions-effectively close the 10,000-mile gap between the once-in-a-lifetime experiences abroad and at home in New York.
