EU must build on its internal strength to gain external power

The EU enlargement policy is a reflection of the Union's global role, said the Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn Tuesday 3. November when he addressed the French senate. "The global credibility of the EU rests on its capacity to shape its neighborhood", Rehn said, "the 2004 enlargement, reuniting European countries after decades of division into blocks, is a sterling example of the pull of the EU's soft power".

Secretary General opens NATO-UAE Public Diplomacy Conference

The NATO Public Diplomacy Division and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates organised an International Conference on "NATO-UAE Relations and the Way Forward in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative"...he aims of this conference were to promote a better mutual understanding between NATO and ICI invited countries and to introduce fresh perceptions and ideas from the region on the way forward in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.

During a visit to Boston two years ago, King Abdullah of Jordan heard the Boston Children’s Chorus perform at the Harvard Club and was bowled over...Why not bring the chorus to Jordan? After all, part of the mission statement for the multiracial ensemble, founded six years ago by Hubie Jones, is that the singers "proudly represent the city of Boston as ambassadors of harmony.’"

Lights are going out at the Foreign Office

Diplomacy rivals prostitution as the oldest profession. Like street-walking, it has never enjoyed a wholly favourable reputation. Often confused with its clandestine cousin, espionage, it has for centuries been associated with deviousness and duplicity. Added to this is the outdated but stubbornly enduring image of the aristocratic diplomat, clad in pinstripes, quaffing champagne, leading the good life in a magnificent embassy.
