Institutes from South Korea and the United States plan to hold a forum on public diplomacy in Washington this month to discuss ways to promote cooperation in non-political sectors between the two nations, organizers said Friday.

The Public Diplomacy Center under Ewha Womans University and the Wilson Center in the U.S. plan to hold a conference on public diplomacy on Nov. 17-18 that will bring about scholars, journalists and government officials from the two nations, they said.

Public diplomacy usually refers to people's diplomacy that aims at promoting communication with the general public in foreign countries through culture and people-to-people exchanges.

The participants are likely to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Seoul and Washington in the field of public diplomacy, they said. The forum is sponsored by Seoul's foreign ministry.

The forum is part of the Seoul government's broad efforts to build a network in promoting public diplomacy with major countries.

Seoul and Beijing held a joint public diplomacy forum in Beijing in mid-June, the second of its kind, to exchange views on cooperation in non-political sectors like culture, education and sports. Seoul and Tokyo have agreed to hold a forum on the issue of public diplomacy in the near future. (Yonhap)
