PHL embassy's mobile radio app brings OFWs together online

Filipinos around the world can now have an easier time connecting to home with an app of the Philippine Embassy in Washington's virtual radio on their smartphones.

The mobile app version of Radyo Tambuli is now available for the Android and iPhone platforms, the embassy said on its website.

“The app increases our presence in the lives of overseas Filipinos and helps further our digital public diplomacy goals,” Ambassador Jose Cuisia Jr. said.

He said the app, initially launched in April, can benefit 3.5 million Filipinos now in the United States.

"(Radyo Tambuli will continue) to offer daily news headlines, original Filipino music, coverage of town-hall style meetings, interviews, opinion surveys and children’s stories to engage the Philippine diaspora," the embassy said.

Also, it said the app provides two-way communication between the Embassy and the Filipino community via direct messaging, social media, and push notifications.

The app also features live and recorded content from premier Filipino broadcasters, such as Veritas, People’s Television Network and the Catholic Media Network as well as other radio and television stations that broadcast in other Filipino languages.

Embassy Minister Elmer Cato said Radyo Tambuli will in the coming weeks also carry history lessons and even discussions on consular issues.

Last August, the embassy's public diplomacy initiative started a service that lets Filipinos in the US get news updates from the Philippines via GMA Network.

Under the arrangement, Filipinos can make a call to receive the daily five-minute news headlines, the embassy said in a statement.

Calls use mobile minutes and incur no extra charges, the embassy said.

"At a time when data costs continue to rise and the price for voice minute plans plummet, using voice minutes to listen to radio has become one of the most affordable and open ways to access news," the embassy said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
