Venezuela marks Maduro’s first year in power

A year into his tenure, Venezuelans are split between those hailing president’s achievments and others who want him out.

This weekend marks one year since Nicolas Maduro became president of Venezuela in a narrow election victory. Maduro promised to carry on the legacy of his mentor, Hugo Chavez.

While Maduro’s supporters say he has done a lot for a country struggling with high crimes rates, unemployment and soaring inflation, his rioting opposition label him a failure.

As Venezuelans flock to the fish market ahead of Easter celebrations, many have different explanations as to why they are paying twice as much as the price they paid a year earlier.
