At Deutsche Welle's fourth annual Global Media Forum, BBG Executive Director Jeffrey Trimble outlined how international media can support global development and human rights. The forum, held June 20-22 in Bonn, Germany, brought together participants in the fields of journalism, politics, culture, business, and development from around the world.

People have spent years trying to learn from past foreign aid disappointments and still, with all these resources, the results are discouraging. This experience should have a chastening influence on the advocates of smart power. But it could be that cultural and economic development works on a different timetable than traditional foreign policy.

The Young African Women Leaders Forum, a two-day workshop and conference for women from across Africa, will take place in Johannesburg and Soweto, South Africa, June 21–22. U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama will address the conference and participate in some of its activities. The forum is designed to promote the role of women in all spheres of life in Africa.
