Malawi President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday officially opened Phalombe Teacher Training College (TTC) which is co-funded by United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID). DFID provided 3.9bn kwacha  (£4.2m) of UK aid for Phalombe TTC, to help address Malawi’s current and future need for qualified teachers.

Drought in a developing country can mean many things: a lack of water, a lack of food and nutrition, and a lack of economic growth that puts even more pressure on impoverished communities relying on farming for their livelihoods. Satellites might be able to help stamp out global poverty by indicating where help is needed most, according to a team of U.S. researchers. The images from satellites could help governments and charities trying to fight poverty but who lack precise, reliable information on where poor people are living and what they need, said the researchers, based at Stanford University in California.
