CAIRO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Egypt sent a cargo of medical aid including medicines and other medical supplies to neighboring conflict-stricken Libya, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

"The cargo is to be distributed on hospitals and medical centers in different Libyan areas in order to support the medical services provided to the Libyan people," said the Egyptian ministry.

In coordination with the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the medical aid was delivered by Egypt's Health Ministry and Red Crescent to the Libyan Red Crescent on Wednesday.

Six years after the 2011 uprising ended the 42-year rule of Muammar Gaddafi as well as his life, Libya is currently engaged in a civil war and run by two rival administrations, one in Tobruk and another in Tripoli.

Hosting several meetings between Libyan rival factions, Egypt is keen on reaching a political settlement to restore security and stability to the war-torn neighboring country whose chaotic conditions pose a threat to the Egyptian western borders with eastern Libya.

Egypt's Western Desert witnessed a terrorist attack that killed at least 21 soldiers in July 2014. Later in February 2015, IS militants released a video showing the beheading of 20 Egyptians near the Libyan chaotic city of Sirte.

Since May, the Egyptian air forces destroyed at least 42 vehicles loaded with weapons, ammunition and explosives before infiltrating into Egypt via its western borders with Libya.
