RI to promote booming IT, digital sector at exhibition

I

ndonesia is seeking to leverage its growing information and communication technology (ICT) industry by gathering international companies and local stakeholders at an upcoming summit and exhibition.

The four-day event will run from Wednesday until Saturday at the JIExpo, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, and be divided into the Indonesia ICT Summit, and the Communic Indonesia and Broadcast Indonesia exhibitions.

The ICT Summit will be organized by the Indonesian Information and Telecommunications Society (Mastel), while the Communic Indonesia and Broadcast Indonesia exhibitions will be organized by Pamerindo Indonesia.

The summit will discuss the potential, and challenges, of the country’s digital economy sector and will involve 120 speakers across several segments, namely broadband and the internet of things (IoT), e-commerce and digital broadcasting.

Companies such as Chinese phone maker Huawei, telecommunications operator Indosat Ooredoo and state-owned telecommunications company Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) are slated to take part in the summit.

Among the issues to be discussed is broadband access and use, which is currently still clustered mainly in several major cities as a result of limited access, especially in the eastern part of the country, amid the rapidly rising number of internet users.

According to the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), the total number of internet users has increased to 100 million people, or 39.2 percent of the country’s total population, from 55 million in 2011.

The government launched the Indonesia Broadband Plan (IBP) in October 2014 to ensure people can maximize the benefits of ICT in their economic, educational, health and other activities.

Under the plan, the government hopes to realize broadband deployment with a minimum speed of 2 megabits per second (Mbps) for fixed broadband and 1 Mbps for mobile broadband. The IBP also details five priority areas to be developed by 2019, namely e-government, e-education, e-health, e-logistics and e-procurement.

Meanwhile, the Communic Indonesia and Broadcast Indonesia exhibitions will see 264 companies from at least 28 countries showcase various products related to internet infrastructure and digital broadcasting solutions.

“Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest economy and embracing digital technology is the key to harnessing the opportunities of a globalized market,” Pamerindo Indonesia president director Ben Wong said.

Stéphane Le Dreau, Southeast Asia general manager of media solutions provider Nagra, said that Indonesia had a huge market potential as mobile penetration continued to grow and the country became more connected.

The Broadcast Indonesia exhibition will focus on presenting products related to broadcasting production and post-production, distribution systems and digital display.

The broadcast industry stands to benefit from the government’s recent decision to remove the movie industry from the negative investment list (DNI) to allow greater foreign investment in the industry.

Mastel chairman Kristiono said the exhibition would be useful for the television industry as the ongoing revision of the 2002 Broadcasting Law sought to digitize national broadcasting. (vps)
