Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha has chosen Varanasi -- India's spiritual capital to represent the country on the international diplomacy map.

The VIP city will play host to G20 financial and economic policy mandarins who will brainstorm on the state of the global economy next week. The meeting is scheduled for March 28-29, a senior government official told ET.

A lot of industry biggies will grace the ceremony with their presence. Other than the delegates from the G20 member countries, officials from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, OECD and the Asian Development Bank will also be present for the high-profile gathering that will see one of Hinduism's holiest places take on a new avatar.

And so, the ghats in the region have undergone a bombastic transformation over the past two and a half years. PM Modi has taken a personal interest in the on-the-ground implementation of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the city.

As a result, the Indian prime minister has spent 3 days in his constituency around the UP polls.

Prior to this, India hosted one such meeting in Goa. The Indian government has shown a keen interest in hosting this meeting in Varanasi and they are confident that the city will successfully pull off the hosting of this important gathering.

Modi will finally be able to manifest the success of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the region, which was once considered to be the dirtiest.

The G20 is an is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies. It was founded in 1999 with the aim of studying, reviewing, and promoting high-level discussion of policy issues pertaining to the promotion of international financial stability.

Germany is currently the G20 chair and the next summit of its leaders is scheduled to be held in Hamburg in July.
