Superpower without a partner

merica no longer wants to be the sole superpower. The American president no longer wants to be the leader of a sole superpower. Nobody else wants America to be the sole superpower and in fact America cannot even afford to be the sole superpower. Yet America has no obvious partner with which to share its superpowerdom, and if America were to cease being a superpower, nothing and no one would take its place.

On Tuesday evening, the world’s most consequential turbaned man, Manmohan Singh, will glide through White House security and take his place at a dinner table beside Barack and Michelle Obama. He is the prime minister of India, a country that could, if Mr. Obama shoots his diplomatic hoops right, come to be a preeminent American ally in the 21st century, taking its place alongside Britain, Israel, and...Japan.

A new survey points to the importance of a long-term approach to nation branding...countries in Asia should be following Singapore’s lead in marketing their country brands. The Lion City has jumped 11 spots in the overall rankings of the world’s top country brands, from 24th spot last year to 13th. That’s quite a jump for a market whose tourism branding, based around the 'Uniquely Singapore' tagline, has come in for frequent criticism.
