Confucius Institute links UT and China

The Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo promotes the exploration of Chinese culture through offering non-credit Chinese language courses at UT and providing teachers from Yanshan University in China to teach Chinese in local area high schools. Chair of the Board of Directors of the CI at UT Lee Heritage, associate professor of music, said the mission of the CI is to provide education and outreach opportunities to students. “That’s both high school students and UT students,” Heritage said. “It’s a cultural exchange opportunity.”

Erdogan Does DC

Turkey's turn to a more active Middle East role was driven, I'd guess, as much by the effective closing of the door to European Union membership as it was by Erdogan's Islamism (the AKP was a strong advocate of EU membership when that was a viable option, hardly the marker of a radical Islamist agenda). Its distancing from Israel is, from what I can tell from a distance, broadly popular with Turkish public opinion -- especially after the Gaza war. And it appears that Turkey and Israel have rebuilt their working relationship over the last few weeks.

Politics underpinned by trade should attach great importance to public diplomacy. In recent years, Turkish TV series are in great demand in Arab countries and these films positively affect the image of Turkey. Likewise, the political stance of Turkey deeply affects Arabs like Prime Minister Erdogan’s attitude in Davos; it paves the way for further attempts made by Turkey in the Middle East.

China turns to Madison Avenue for an image makeover

Plagued by recalls of toxic toys, poison pet food and other products, and facing rising trade barriers for its exports, China is taking a page from the American corporate playbook. It has hired a Madison Avenue ad agency to help burnish its image. In what is believed to be Beijing's first global ad campaign, a television commercial now airing on CNN in the U.S., Asia and Europe portrays satisfied consumers enjoying Chinese-made goods. It also touts the notion that China's manufacturing prowess benefits nations around the globe.

Is Turkey the Real Winner of the Iraq War?

The reasons for Turkey’s emergence as the real winner of the war should be searched for in Ankara’s soft power as the synthesis of its historical depth, dynamic entrepreneurship, and reconciliatory culture. This soft power takes its roots from the foreign policy understanding based on the focus on preservation of civilian life and “common interests”.
