Pakistan: Key Test for Soft Power

The selection of President Obama as this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner has in just a few days generated a wide variety of opinions. One thing nearly everyone seems to agree on, however, is that the award is an expression of the very high expectations the President has raised globally for a new era of diplomatic multi-lateral solutions to current conflicts brought about via “soft power” rather than war.

Nigeria produces 1,200 films yearly -Adesanya

Head of the US Mission in Nigeria, Anthony Eterno, said that the US was using movies as a tool of public diplomacy to reach out to Nigerians. Mr. Eterno, who noted that Nigeria's Nollywood was progressing in a way that it did not need the assistance of the US, said that film production could aid a country's economic growth and cultural integration.

The Universities of Scotland and the Association of Indian Universities Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding for greater collaboration between the two in the field of higher education. The agreement aims at boosting student and faculty exchange programmes between the two nations.

Ronald Reagan’s Bloody ‘Apocalypto’

To manage U.S. public perceptions of the wars in Central America, Reagan also authorized a systematic program of distorting information and intimidating American journalists. Called "public diplomacy" or "perception management," the project was run by a CIA propaganda veteran, Walter Raymond Jr., who was assigned to the National Security Council staff.
