U.Va.-Led Study Finds Global Dissatisfaction with U.S., Despite Obama’s Popularity

A popular belief holds that the United States' standing among the rest of the world suffered during President George W. Bush's administration, and that the election of President Obama subsequently has reversed that trend. Not quite so, according to a report released Oct. 1 by the American Political Science Association Task Force, made up of 20 leading political scientists and chaired by Jeffrey W. Legro, chairman of the University of Virginia's Department of Politics.

Hanoi-Fukuoka cultural exchange under way

A week-long cultural exchange between Hanoi, Vietnam and the Fukuoka prefecture in southern Japan kicked off on October 7 with the opening festival for Hanoi-Vietnam days in Fukuoka. The festival for Hanoi-Vietnam days in Fukuoka is expected to last till October 11 with a series of activities including musical performances, traditional dance, an exhibition on Vietnamese handicrafts, a film presentation and a talk to introduce Vietnam’s culture.

Armed Services Committees Authorize Funds and Activities for State Department information operations

The VOICE Act in the Senate version of the NDAA included, among other things, $30 million to the Broadcasting Board of Governors for broadcasting, online activities, and capital improvements all aimed at Iran; $20 million for a new “Iranian Electronic Education, Exchange, and Media Fund” to “counter efforts [by the Iranian Government] to block, censor, or monitor the Internet in Iran”; and $5 million for the Secretary of State to “document, collect, and dissemination [sic] information about human rights in Iran”.

Foreign Based Reporters in America are an Underutilized Public Diplomacy Resource

According to a report released earlier this year by the Pew Project on Excellence in Journalism, 1,490 foreign correspondents were accredited to the Foreign Press Center in Washington as of October 2008. That is an almost ten-fold increase since 1968. Foreign accredited journalists represent nearly 800 media outlets from 113 countries and territories. Journalists from Africa, the Middle East, and China account for much of the increase. From a public diplomacy standpoint, the foreign journalists working in Washington are underutilized.

Obama envoy hopes for early relaunch of Mideast peace talks

US President Barack Obama’s special envoy to the Middle East said Thursday he hoped his latest shuttle mission in the region would edge Israelis and Palestinians closer toward reviving long-stalled peace talks soon. “We’re going to continue with our efforts to achieve an early relaunch of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians,” Senator George Mitchell told reporters before a private meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem.
