Call for Papers: CPD-Oxford University Conference

Recent years have seen the digitalization of diplomacy. Diplomats and diplomatic institutions throughout the world are embracing digital platforms to coordinate multi-lateral negotiations, foster ties with diasporas, deliver consular aid and create transnational advocacy campaigns. Notably, diplomatic institutions have also come to regard digital platforms as a medium for public diplomacy activities and the projection of soft power.

This has led to growing interest among young and emerging scholars in focusing on the fields of digital and public diplomacy. To recognize and support the work of doctoral students, and as part of their commitment to advance the study of public diplomacy, the USC Center on Public Diplomacy (CPD) hosted the first Doctoral Conference on Public Diplomacy in October, 2016. To build upon the success of the inaugural conference, CPD and the Oxford Digital Diplomacy Research Group (DigDiploROx) will be co-hosting a Doctoral Conference on Digital & Public Diplomacy at the University of Oxford, June 2-3, 2017.

Submission is open to a wide range of topics and methodological approaches under the broad rubric of digital and public diplomacy. We encourage submissions that are closely aligned with the CPD and DigDiploROx current research initiatives and themes, which include:

  • Digital Diplomacy Strategy
  • Novel Methodologies in the Study of Digital Diplomacy
  • Ethics in the Age of Digital Diplomacy
  • Impact and Effectiveness of Digital Diplomacy
  • Public Diplomacy Performance and Innovation
  • Public Diplomacy in Conflict Environments
  • Public Diplomacy in a Sustainable World
  • Nonstate Public Diplomacy
  • Rising Soft Power in a Multipolar World

A 500-word abstract and CV should be submitted by March 15, 2017, via email, to cpd@usc.edu

Applicants will be notified about the status of their acceptance on April 3, 2017. Students whose abstracts are accepted are required to submit full papers by May 1, 2017.

Lodging for doctoral students presenting at the conference will be covered. Presenters will need to cover their own travel to Oxford. For questions or more information, please email cpd@usc.edu.
