Ancient Chinese residence on display in Paris

Now in another East-meets-West story today, we fly to Paris, where the ancient residences of the people of Anhui Province in east China have been captured on canvas and put on display. The exhibition, which opened over the weekend, was designated as part of the celebration for the 60th anniversary of the founding of PRC, as well as the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France.

Manga and dorama entice RI students to learn Japanese

Japanese cultural products are one of the main reasonsfor Indonesian students' increasing interest in studying the Japanese language. The academic head at the Japanese Language Teaching department of the Jakarta State University, Dwi Astuti Retno Lestari, told The Jakarta Post that her students mostly cited manga (Japanese comics), anime (Japanese animation) and dorama (Japanese dramas) as their reasons to choose Japanese.

Korean Cultural Extravaganza In Brunei

"B-Boy Breakout" and a Korean folk dance troupe, "Korea House", will be holding two special shows in the country at the end of the month. The performers will be in the Sultanate for the "Saranghaeyo (I Love) Korea Festival", which is being organised by Korea Tourism Organisation Kuala Lumpur and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Brunei.

Cuba needs this show to go on

Cultural and artistic events of this magnitude can be transformational, planting roots of hope and leading to the overall grassroots change many seek for Cuba. At the most basic level, spectators will be entertained and will get much needed relief from daily frustrations. But when they become inspired, hope will follow. They'll be thirsty for more. They'll be receptive to more. They will question more and demand more.

Improving South Korea’s image abroad

The South Korean government, which depends excessively on easy-to-stage, one-off events, is likely all too aware that it is impossible to promote South Korea’s image through cultural events alone. "And yet, I get the feeling that the Lee administration is suffering from some kind of fundamental misunderstanding," said Park No-ja, Professor of Korean studies at the University of Oslo, Norway.

All aboard: France Express leaves station

France Express, the annual arts festival hosted by the French Cultural Center in Korea, embarked on its four-month journey last week. The event, which launched in 2007 to commemorate the 120-year amity between France and Korea, includes 33 cultural offerings ranging from exhibitions and concerts to plays, movie screenings and outdoor performances.

Engaging With Iran Is Like Having Sex With Someone Who Hates You

Well, I am all for talks without preconditions, and I have said several times in this space that I think we should offer the Iranians cooperation on a wide spectrum of topics, especially the very pressing one of helping to "proof" Iran against the coming earthquake that could devastate its capital city. There may even be areas of potential interest in our having common enemies in the Taliban and al-Qaida. But things have changed a little since the president and his secretary of state were sparring over the word unconditional during the primaries.
