Smart Power? Summer 2015 PD Mag Out Now

The Summer 2015 issue of Public Diplomacy Magazine is now available.

The issue, titled "Smart Power?," features sections on Contemporary Smart Power, Technology & Smart Power, Smart Power Case Studies, and an endnote. The issue includes contributions from Philip Seib, Tara D. Sonenshine, and an interview with Joseph Nye.

The letter from the Editor-in-Chief, Jocelyn Coffin, reads in part:

"In 2009, before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, incoming Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton stated, “we must use what has been called ‘smart power,’ the full range of tools at our disposal – diplomatic, economic military, political, legal, and cultural – picking the right tool, or combination of tools, for each situation.” Talking about U.S. foreign policy goals and tools, Clinton recognized that while military force is sometimes necessary, diplomacy is equally vital to creating a peaceful and prosperous world. Today, acknowledging the urgent foreign policy challenges the global community faces, it is worth exploring how nations have put smart power in to practice.

The Summer 2015 issue of Public Diplomacy Magazine revisits Clinton’s appeal, turning to scholars and practitioners to find out how the concept of smart power has evolved over time, how various nations harness smart power today, what smart power practice might look like in the future, and how the field of public diplomacy can contribute to the discussion."
