Turkey needs a Präsenz Schweiz

A recent Turkish media delegation visit to Switzerland organized by the country's official public diplomacy agency has revealed Turkey's urgent need for a similar agency. Präsenz Schweiz (Presence Switzerland) invited a group of Turkish journalists for a three-day visit to Zurich, Bern and Lausanne in order to introduce the Turkish media to the Swiss democratic system and economy ahead of the first ever Swiss presidential visit to Turkey.

Three students win first-ever UN-YouTube online video contest on hunger

Three university students from the United States will head to Ethiopia next month to film the work of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) after winning the first-ever online video competition organized by the agency and YouTube to raise awareness about global hunger...“We wanted to reach a new group of activists and humanitarians,” said Nancy Roman, WFP’s Director of Communications. “The YouTube generation is confident, forward-thinking and web-savvy. Their involvement in hunger initiatives can have a powerful and widespread impact on the fight against hunger.”

US diplomacy tainted by ‘militarization’

According to the report, which was put together by a task force of 14 former senior foreign service officers with the help of an advisory group chaired by former UN ambassador Thomas Pickering, the State Department currently suffers serious shortages in personnel in virtually all of its operations, from consular activity to development assistance and public diplomacy. The report noted the decline in the foreign service and State Department spending began at the end of the Cold War when the international affairs budget was reduced by roughly 30% in real terms.
