What India must learn from China
A superpower diplomacy has to be backed by `cultural` propaganda and economic diplomacy. China has begun to act. It has earmarked some $6.62 billion for its `overseas propaganda` . The State media like CCTV or Xinhua News Agency will increase their coverage in several different languages, mainly in the West, in Asia, Middle East and Africa.
Rudd wants Australian voice heard louder
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has set up a new division within the public service to help push his reform agenda through the international media. A spokesman for Mr Rudd says the section is part of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and will coordinate Australia's involvement in global forums.
Chinese general on a long march
Drew Thompson, director of China studies at The Nixon Center, sees China's decision to have General Xu Caihou, the second-highest ranking officer in the Chinese People's Liberation Army, address a public audience on this trip as an indicator of China's desire "to engage in public diplomacy and shape the image of the PLA abroad".

'Soft power" in Canadian foreign policy isn't much discussed these days. It used to be all the rage in Ottawa circles. Instead, "hard power" - armed forces that can break things and kill people as need be - is the new focus of attention and money, especially in Afghanistan.

Romania: MAE to use Twitter to quench suspicion of ballot box fraud abroad
Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) will present on Twitter the organisation abroad of the November 22 presidential election, and this initiative is sought as an exercise in transparency over the election, Director General of the MAE Public Diplomacy Department Oana Marinescu told a news conference on Monday.
Africa week: Africa week aims to heighten awareness, spread culture
The Africa Initiative and African Students Union hosted the three-day event, which is part of a larger campus-wide event, Africa Week. The week, which is hosted by the African American Students Union, is meant to be a re-awakening of Africa's dreams and celebrate its achievements.
On the Iranian Diaspora
The Iranian diaspora should promote cross-cultural programmes to enhance and raise interest in the Iran that the mass media seldom cover. Every Iranian émigré is, on this account, now a ‘goodwill ambassador’ of the country’s long history and culture. Such ’people’s diplomacy’ should in time eradicate stereotypes and prejudices, bridging gaps amongst civilizations.
