Confucius Says A Lot

The Indian government is a little soft in the matter of pushing India's potential soft power. It has a Nehru Centre, in London, where it promotes Indian culture. Sure, the British need to know a lot about India since they have been away so long. But what about the rest of the world? Why not take a leaf out of China's book and look at the possibility of explaining India better to folks abroad?

A wall of talent

The fall of the Berlin Wall stands as a highlight in German history, and this week the German American Society of Portland commemorates the event with German Culture Week 2009. The German American Society of Portland has cooked up seven days of culture from the fatherland for the event, from photo exhibits to puppet shows. A number of artists, dancers and musicians have travelled from Germany to share their work.

British Council’s 75th birthday

David Miliband: The British Council celebrated its 75th birthday yesterday. Through the aftermath of war; the end of Empire; the chill of the Cold War and the rise of Al Qaeda, the Council has upheld the values of democratic governance and debate, delivering a service of intercultural relations which is much admired (and still being copied) around the world. Last year alone, the Council engaged face to face with 13.2 million people and reached 221 million.

Pesta Blogger 2009: Broadening the scope of Public Diplomacy

As we discuss the need & possibility of broadening the understanding of Public Diplomacy in India, there have been some interesting developments around the world with PD 2.0 worth taking note of. Last week, I received this interesting bit of information from the US state department that the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, is sponsoring Pesta Blogger 2009 - Indonesia’s only national-level bloggers’ gathering for the second consecutive year.

RFE/RL’s Azerbaijani Service Wins Major Award for Political Coverage

In the face of ongoing pressure and harassment from authorities, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service (Radio Azadliq) has won one of journalism's most prestigious awards for its coverage of Azerbaijan's controversial March referendum. Radio Azadliq accepted a 2009 Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Media Excellence Award, an honor granted each year for "the best in broadcasting worldwide." Azadliq took first place in the category of 'Best Radio Coverage of a Single News Event.'

VOA Correspondent Wins International Broadcasting Award for Sri Lanka Coverage

Voice of America (VOA) correspondent Steve Herman was recognized by the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) for his coverage of Sri Lanka’s civil war. Herman’s reporting was called "highly commended" in the radio category of "clearest coverage of a single news event." The award was presented Wednesday at the AIB’s annual International Media Excellence Awards event in London.

6 young writers get British Council story contest prizes

The wait is over for six successful young writers who received their prizes for the British Council Middle East Short Story Competition, at an event held at I Spy Bookshop in City Centre recently.The competition was held as part of the celebrations to mark the 75 years service of British Council around the globe.

Africa, China in win-win cooperation: Gabonese speaker

"The Sino-African cooperation is a win-win situation. Each party benefits from the cooperation. We are determined to pursue this cooperation," the Gabonese speaker told Xinhua in an interview on Thursday. Guy Nzouba Ndama, the president of Gabon's National Assembly, made the comments in the capital Libreville after visiting a photo exhibition on the fruits of the 2006 Beijing Summit on the Sino-African cooperation (FOCAC).
