This Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama will make the first visit of his presidency to an American mosque. His appearance at the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB), in Maryland, is part of a growing push by the White House and Muslim American communities to cultivate a message of religious tolerance and understanding about Islam. Imam Hammad Ahamad, from ISB, describes Obama’s visit as essential to helping “teach and educate people that what you see on the news is not the true Islam.” This video from CBS Baltimore highlights the importance of cross-cultural engagement and people-to-people dialogue as a first step in countering “Islamophobia.”
