Into Africa: Bush Initiatives That Deserve Continuing Support
AFRICOM is an important step forward in U.S.-Africa relations. Although poorly "rolled out," diligent efforts to explain the command's objectives would substantially reduce criticism. AFRICOM leadership, together with State Department and Agency for International Development, must affirm the need for balance between diplomacy, development, and defense and clearly emphasize that AFRICOM in not a militarization of U.S. foreign aid. AFRICOM's role as capacity builder in partnership with African militaries and the proposed AU African Standby Force should be highlighted.
Foreign journalists following election process
Their visit to the Hannibal Courier-Post and meeting with HCP Editor Mary Lou Montgomery was one stop during a 10-day tour the group of journalists from around the globe is taking in the days leading up to the election. The trip is being sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Press Centers. Babs Chase of the state department explained the objective of the expedition. “This tour is one of many that we’ve done throughout the election year to highlight democracy to countries all over the world,” she said.
Attaching real purpose to US foreign aid
In its waning months, the Bush administration has mapped out a communications and outreach strategy designed to win the so-called "war of ideas" against Al-Qaeda and related groups, and the candidates, their advisers, and independent analysts have outlined plans, proffered advice, and published reports detailing how to more broadly improve US public diplomacy efforts.
Names in the Game
Cal Ripken, Jr. will visit Nicaragua from November 13-18, the second trip that the baseball great will make in his role as an American Public Diplomacy Envoy for the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
America Defends Itself on the Internet
A briefing was held in Washington on Tuesday on “U.S. Public Diplomacy and the War of Ideas.” Under Secretary of State James Glassman spoke about the work of “digital outreach teams” that will work to improve the image of the United States and fight extremist propaganda on the Internet. Those teams may begin activity on the Russian-language segment of the Internet.
