Public Diplomacy and Diasporas
The Winter 2013 issue of PDiN Monitor focuses on the role of diasporas in public diplomacy. Diaspora communities have long been considered an integral part of public diplomacy initiatives, and their role will will only continue to increase. This issue of PDiN Monitor discusses examples of how diasporas are engaged in public diplomacy.
CPD Director Philip Seib reflects on the increased ability of diaspora communities to remain engaged with their homelands because of technological advancements and how this should be taken into account by public diplomacy practitioners in The View From CPD.
In the feature article, Smith-Mundt Belatedly Enters the 21st Century, Helle Dale discusses the modernization of the Smith-Mundt Act that occurred in January of this year. Among other implications, this allows for American diaspora communities to stay engaged with their countries of origin through access to the BBG broadcasters.
Lastly, PDiN Extras presents a collection of the recent PDiN articles on diasporas and public diplomacy, and PDiN Highlights documents reflections on Secretary Clinton's tenure and predictions about Secretary Kerry's.
