Marred Afghan Vote Leaves U.S. in a Delicate Spot

On Monday, as the vote-counting in Afghanistan was nearing an end, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was briefed by the American ambassador in Kabul, Karl W. Eikenberry. The same day, the ambassador delivered a blunt message to the front-runner, President Hamid Karzai: “Don’t declare victory.”

How to Engage Iran (If You Must)

The move is a political victory of sorts for Obama, who has made "engagement" with Iran a centerpiece of his Middle East policy. But it might end up being a Pyrrhic victory. If true to form, Iran will likely try to use the upcoming talks with Washington the same way it did previous ones with Europe -- as a way to play for time and add permanence to its nuclear project.

Green is the New Black

Shortly after the announcement of Iran's contested election results on June 12, 2009, Iranians opposed to the outcome took to the streets in protest. They believed the vote was rigged. Some carried the opposition's signature green banners, posters and flags. Others wore green kerchiefs, t-shirts and wristbands. The precursor to green street fashion was born.

Iran’s revolution? The hardliners won

An alternative course might be to await the regime's supposedly inevitable implosion while simultaneously encouraging it. Advocates say this could be done through mass disinvestment campaigns, similar to those waged against apartheid-era South Africa, through stepped-up support for "ordinary" Iranians, women's groups, students and trade unionists, and by applying pressure through and on international institutions and businesses.
