On the Iranian Diaspora

The Iranian diaspora should promote cross-cultural programmes to enhance and raise interest in the Iran that the mass media seldom cover. Every Iranian émigré is, on this account, now a ‘goodwill ambassador’ of the country’s long history and culture. Such ’people’s diplomacy’ should in time eradicate stereotypes and prejudices, bridging gaps amongst civilizations.

The enduring US immigration diplomacy has become frosty for non-US citizens. Every time, foreigners have to pass through a hapless screening while facing the visa process or to get immigration clearance at the port of entry in the United States. Foreigners are not against the existing law and process, but are against the behavior by US Immigration authorities.

In Australia it is called going to the theatre. In Washington it is called soft diplomacy. Judging by the response to the Sydney Theatre Company's opening night of Streetcar Named Desire at the Kennedy Centre, Washington's most prestigious arts venue, Australia has pulled off the soft power equivalent of hosting G20 or getting the North Koreans back to the negotiating table.

Shalom: Bostrom’s invitation ‘shameful’

Dimona Mayor Meir Cohen stressed that in Europe, "the street is controlled by negative Palestinian propaganda," suggesting that Israel was damaging its own public diplomacy by ignoring hostile publications instead of confronting them. Shalom, however, did not accept that argument.

Clinton minces no words with Pakistan

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton minced no words during a maiden diplomatic tour to Pakistan, admonishing its silence on Al-Qaeda but winning plaudits for trying to bridge the trust deficit. Interestingly the local media -- generally critical of the United States and a key target for Clinton's public diplomacy -- indulged in quiet praise.

Nicholas Cull, the British-born professor of diplomacy at the University of Southern California, said Pop Idol has given many in the Middle East their first taste of voting. “Today they cast their votes in popular entertainments,” he said, “tomorrow they could be demanding to vote for their leaders.”
