KEEP READINGUN Security Council Charts a Course for Syria
On Friday, the 15-member United Nations Security Council agreed unanimously to endorse an international framework for a peace process in Syria. The country’s five-year civil war has claimed more than 250,000 lives, displaced many millions more, and been recognized as ground zero for helping ISIS establish a caliphate in its ungoverned eastern territory. This new video from PBS News Hour discusses the details of the agreement, including the significance of the vote, the next steps in the peace process, and what’s at stake for President Bashar al-Assad. The video underscores the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and cooperation, noting that despite individual military efforts by Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States to stop ISIS, “they have come to the conclusion that they can never take on ISIS successfully until the boil of the Syria conflict [is politically resolved].”
