Chinese Linguist Helps to Save Tanzanian Languages

This video from CCTV showcases the work of a Chinese linguist working in cooperation with a team of Tanzanian anthropologists to safeguard one of the country’s remote tribal languages. In Northern Tanzania, an estimated 5,000 people speak the Kisegeju language, a language deemed “under threat” as younger generations increasingly opt to speak Swahili rather than their native tongue. With the language at risk of disappearance, Chinese polyglot Shen Yuning is helping local scholars to create a written record of the language before it disappears. This video demonstrates the power of both citizen diplomacy and cultural diplomacy to preserve and protect a nation’s indigenous cultural heritage from being forgotten.
