This week many world leaders came together in New York City for the GODAN Summit to examine progress that has been made and challenges that remain in the global fight to end hunger. The U.S. Department of State’s Special Representative for Global Food Security, Dr. Nancy Stetson, joined the conference to talk about new innovations in food security and the use of data. 

Next week U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will host the third annual Our Ocean Conference in Washington, D.C. on September 15-16, as a way to continue the wave global action to protect our ocean from the effects of human activity, including unsustainable and illegal fishing, marine pollution, and climate-related impacts.

President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday joined a global agreement to cut greenhouse gases, moving the world toward a significant reduction in climate-warming emissions faster time frame than previously imagined.

The two day (1-2 September) international conclave is attended by many distinguished scholars and participants from 70 nations. This year's theme will be 'Soft Power and Its Influence on Global Issues'. Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi delivered the key note speech while the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva delivered the introductory speech.

Satellites might be able to help stamp out global poverty by indicating where help is needed most, according to a team of U.S. researchers. The images from satellites could help governments and charities trying to fight poverty but who lack precise, reliable information on where poor people are living and what they need, said the researchers, based at Stanford University in California.

Sri Lanka Army's annual defense seminar this year will focus on the soft power and its influence on resolving global Issues. The Colombo Defense Seminar - 2016 is scheduled to be held on Thursday and Friday, September 1-2 at the BMICH in Colombo under the topic 'Soft Power and its influence on Global Issues'.
