United Nations to Focus on Refugee Crisis, Syrian Conflict

World leaders meeting at the United Nations starting on Monday will try to make progress on two intractable problems at the top of the global agenda — the biggest refugee crisis since World War II and the Syrian conflict now in its sixth year, which has claimed over 300,000 lives.

Japan and Saudi Arabia: The Ties That Bind

 Japan and Saudi Arabia each want a better economy. To get there, they’ve just doubled down on closer bilateral relations and deeper cultural ties. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met in Tokyo September 1 to sign a handful of agreements that together better align their economic interests.

Chinese Communities in Australia Resent China’s Rising Influence

Debate about China’s growing influence in Australia has become so heated within Chinese communities, they even have a nickname for those who put out government propaganda: “wu mao." The phrase translates as “50 cent” and is a reference to speculation that the Chinese government pays 50 cents for each pro-government post in the media.

Philippines Eyes Talks With China Sans Preconditions

The Philippines is quietly making arrangements through diplomatic channels for bilateral talks with China without any preconditions to discuss their competing claims in the South China Sea and West Philippine Sea, Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay said. The inadequately armed Philippine military cannot fight China in any battle and this is why President Duterte ordered the Navy not to conduct joint patrols in the South China Sea with the US; he said...joint patrols could be seen by China as a provocative act, making it more difficult to peacefully resolve territorial problems.

New Zealand Space Industry Prepared for Takeoff

New Zealand, seen as the nation of cows, could soon become the nation with the highest frequency of space launches anywhere in the world.  A relatively uncongested airspace and an appetite for new technologies, meant Airways had already helped about 120 near-space launches in New Zealand airspace, and Nasa and Google had both chosen the country for balloon launches.

A Warm Welcome for Refugees Who Settle in Utah

Utah, a spacious state crossed by mountains, valleys and desert, takes in more refugees than some U.S. states with much larger populations. “It’s perfect here,” says Nour Eddin Abdul Bari, who worked as a chef and restaurateur in Damascus before fleeing Syria. He lauds the medical and education services provided for three of his five children with special needs.
