Nick Broomfield: Tanzania is the next movie hotspot

It's a country known for its stunning safari landscapes, long beaches and towering Mount Kilimanjaro. And according to documentary film-maker Nick Broomfield -- Tanzania is also the perfect natural film set. But though it has its own film festival, Zanzibar is paradoxically without a cinema. Broomfield is pledging his support for the renovation of a dilapidated art deco cinema in Stone Town.

Aung San Suu Kyi will speak to Congress

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will make a rare appearance in Congress on Wednesday, testifying via video at a hearing in the House. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate spent years under house arrest by the military junta ruling Burma, also known as Myanmar. And so, when the invitation to testify came, she was reluctant to leave the country for fear that she would not be allowed back in.

U.S. Department of State Announces First International Exchange With USA Volleyball

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced today a partnership with USA Volleyball that will bring 50 volleyball coaches to the United States from Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Trinidad and Tobago. The delegation will will meet with their U.S. counterparts and participate in coaching seminars and clinics.

West Africa Seeks Improved Business Ties with China

Senior officials from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) begin talks in China this week to find investors in agriculture, industry and roads and other physical infrastructure. Some groups have expressed concern that increased investment will only benefit the Asian giants and African elites.

Broadcasting Board Travels to Ethiopia, South Sudan and Nigeria to Broaden VOA’s Reach

Three members of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, Dana Perino, Susan McCue, and Michael Meehan, will visit Ethiopia, South Sudan and Nigeria to broaden the Voice of America's reach and impact in Africa. Board members will meet with high-ranking government officials, VOA journalists and broadcasting affiliates to address challenges and opportunities in the region.

Germany to open door to foreign experts

Germany will ease restrictions on foreign doctors and engineers seeking work in the country in a bid to plug a yawning gap in the labour market of Europe’s top economy. Education and Research Minister Annette Schavan told the daily Passauer Neue Presse that the centre-right government would this week approve a draft law aimed at attracting thousands of professionals from abroad.
