Kuwait hosts Chinese photo exhibition

On the occasion of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of China, the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) in cooperation with the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait will host a photo exhibition of China which was launched on Tuesday and it will last till the end of Ramadan.

Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq are taking a journey through New York City’s Muslim communities by visiting a different mosque in the city each night of the Ramadan month. They are documenting the experience in writing and with photos at 30 Mosques in 30 Days. NYC has over a hundred mosques and the project offers an interesting peek at their diversity, their histories and the communities that gather at each place of worship.

SFA to open Mexico exchange exhibition

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open one half of “Connecting the Dots: Art Exchange” at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus. The exhibition of artworks by 26 students and faculty from the University of Chihuahua, Mexico, is opening on the same evening that an exhibition of artworks by 21 SFA students and faculty is opening in Chihuahua.

Deconstructing the Interactive Shibboleth

USIA, as a communications agency, was quick to understand the usefulness of the computer, of the World Wide Web, of interactive press conferences and panel discussions first via telephone and later via satellite TV. USIA showed 16 mm films in the jungle, schlepped monitors and VCRs to provincial capitals where power often came from generators, and sometimes, for extra special 32 mm film occasions, rented whole theaters.

Anti-Americanism: Alive and Well in the Age of Obama

A newer Pew survey suggests that most Islamic countries distrust the United States under the leadership of President Obama about as much as they did under President George W. Bush. Yes, majorities of the Muslim populations interviewed still believe that America plays a mostly destructive role in the world. Most view the United States as “an enemy” and “a military threat” to their own country. Most disapprove of the American-led effort to combat terrorism.

The posts (notes in Facebook lingo) by the Facebook group “Public Diplomacy Officers for Change” are required reading. In their words, past reports on the future of public diplomacy fail to “truly identify what we as the next generation of public diplomacy officers need to be effective in our jobs. What we don’t need is a return to USIA. What we need is a new foundation for public diplomacy professionals to build on.”
