Missile Diplomacy Disaster

Of all the days President Obama could have chosen to announce that the United States will abandon its plans for a missile defense site in the Czech Republic and Poland, September 17 was possibly the worst he could have chosen. As any Pole could tell you, this was the date the Soviet army invaded Poland in World War II, after Nazi Germany had launched its assault on the country on September 1.

Brand Australia tender opens

Advertising agencies are being asked to put up their hand to develop the new brand that will make Australia's traditionally ocker image a bit more highbrow. The federal government is trying to reposition the nation's image to focus more on its cultural and intellectual assets, rather than just shining the light on its value as a tourist destination.

Israel is accused of having committed war crimes, and possibly crimes against humanity, during Operation Cast Lead last December and January. The rocket barrages against southern Israel that prompted the IDF assault on Hamas are mostly relegated to the margins of the new-old TV coverage - just as in the Goldstone report itself.

Justice in Gaza

I accepted with hesitation my United Nations mandate to investigate alleged violations of the laws of war and international human rights during Israel’s three-week war in Gaza last winter. The issue is deeply charged and politically loaded. I accepted because the mandate of the mission was to look at all parties: Israel; Hamas, which controls Gaza; and other armed Palestinian groups.

As The Peace Corps Turns 50, What Now?

As the Peace Corps approaches its 50th anniversary, the service program is at something of a crossroads. The agency never fulfilled President Kennedy's dream of sending 100,000 Americans abroad every year, and it has been criticized for parachuting too many inexperienced college grads into development jobs they aren't prepared for. But friends in Congress have secured a 10 percent budget increase for the Peace Corps, and some of the agency's boosters are hoping for more soon.

U.S Embassy Launches Youtube Channel For Indonesian Viewers

The U.S. Embassy launched its own YouTube channel, featuring over 100 short videos covering a wide range of topics about the United States. Located at www.youtube.com/pasjakartaindonesia, the clips featured on the video-sharing website are in Indonesian or have Indonesian subtitles, a release from the US embassy made available to Antara news agency here on Thursday, said.
