The element most critical and central to public-diplomacy success? A quality corps of skilled public-diplomacy practitioners. We need to re-invest in such people and refocus on fundamentals. A new generation of talented men and women needs to know that a public-diplomacy career will be rewarding and meaningful. They need to be given the institutional and professional credibility essential to engage effectively with skeptical or hostile foreign publics.
