Cumbia on the World Stage

Mariana Yegros, known better by her stage name La Yegros, is merging Argentinian folk and cumbia music with electronica, and finding growing international success.  Also known as the “queen of electrocumbia,” La Yegros blends Afro-Latin cumbia beats with electronic music and influences ranging from reggae to Arabic pop. Cumbia, an energetic style of dance music, first began among Afro-Latinos in Colombia but quickly developed an Argentinian branch that merged with folkloric music. It mirrors the path of another famous Argentinian cultural export: the tango, which also had African roots and gradually won acceptance among the country's elite before going global.

With an impressive fifteen international tours and no sign of slowing down, La Yegros continues to elevate Argentinian music to the world stage and experiment with global influences.
