The company behind the opening ceremony of India’s recently concluded Commonwealth Games is planning an initial public offering, which would give investors access to India’s emerging live event business.

Unfortunately, the rough run-up to the CWG was, and still is a major embarrassment for India and tarnishes its image as it competes with other emerging economies such as China, South Africa and Brazil on the global stage.

But, for sheer drama, the unofficial "pre-Games show" – the country's mad dash to get everything in place to host the quadrennial international Games – still stole the spotlight.

The Commonwealth Games are not expected to be particularly gripping viewing for sports fans. After all, most of the top international athletes have pulled out, citing everything from scheduling to muscle strains as evidence of India’s abysmal planning piled up and Delhi was stricken with an outbreak of dengue fever.

The 19th Commonwealth Games were declared open on Sunday in a spectacular opening ceremony that should help repair the damage to India's image caused by a calamitous build-up to the sporting festival.

The Commonwealth Games in Delhi were billed to be a glorious statement of arrival, an opportunity for India to showcase its emergence as a global power, to even demonstrate to the world its ability to match, albeit on a smaller scale, the Chinese grandeur in hosting a global event.
