Cultural Diplomacy

The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, The Council for International People's Friendship, Rashid Diab Arts Centre and Al-Faisal Cultural Centre launched recently a traditional Venezuelan and Sudanese songs dedicated to friendship between peoples on October 22nd, 2014.

Twitter. Facebook. E-mail blasts. Such phenomena may be a boon to Information Age theaters seeking publicity. But will cyber-marketing ever attain the level of high art, as a much older marketing medium — the theater poster — has frequently done? 

Poland is one of the strongest supporters of Israel in the European Union and this is much appreciated in Tel Aviv.  I believe an important role can be played by the Museum of Polish Jews in Warsaw, whose permanent exhibition is to open at the end of October 2014.

This week in PD news, we saw the Chinese Government focus its efforts on cultural diplomacy.

Fourteen music bands from the SAARC countries and observatory country France will perform in the national capital Friday, in the eighth edition of the South Asian Bands Festival.

On November 2, Bruce Gregory published the most recent edition of his periodic public diplomacy reading list. Known affectionately at CPD as "Bruce's List," it is a compilation of books, journal articles, papers, and blogs on a wide variety of PD topics, and features a number of CPD scholars. Highlights in this edition include:

A five-day (November 5-9) art residency entitled "Maitri-India China Women Artists' Residency" was inaugurated at the Diggi Palace in Jaipur by the guest of honour justice R S Chauhan with the lighting of lamp and Kathak performance by the Jaipur's well known dance performer Manjari Kiran Mahajani.

Beijing's China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra is positioned as the voice of that nation's younger generation. It's on a tour that both signals a turning point in the Philadelphia Orchestra's cultural exchange with China and has turned into a media frenzy.
