How did an art exhibit in an abandoned Hong Kong restaurant turn into an international mural festival based in Kakaako? The evolution of POW! WOW! Hawaii, an event known to contemporary artists around the world, started with local artist Jasper Wong. When he was based in Hong Kong in 2010, Wong set out to create art that focused on process and collaboration rather than sales potential.

In April 2013, I had the opportunity to accompany the Hawaiian slack key guitar ensemble Keola Beamer and Jeff Peterson, with Moanalani Beamer, as tour manager as the group toured Brazil with the U.S. Department of State's American Music Abroad program.

I first got a glimpse of Hawaiian public diplomacy a few years ago at the Taipei Flora Expo in 2011. Following a stint in Taiwan as a Visiting Fellow at a thinktank researching Taiwanese public diplomacy, I stopped in the Expo, which featured different countries exhibiting and showcasing their unique flora.

According to Keola Beamer, master of the Hawaiian slack key guitar, it’s that moment when you see that you’ve truly touched someone and “you see this beautiful light in them. That’s what we do it for.” Beamer, his wife, dancer and hula master Moanalani Beamer, and fellow guitarist Jeff Peterson traveled through Brazil with the American Music Abroad (AMA) program earlier this year to share the “philosophy of Aloha, a warm philosophy of embracing other people and cultures” in the world.
