Ambassador Amr Aljowaily is an international civil servant, diplomat, academic and writer with over 35 years of professional experience. He currently holds the post of Director of Directorate of Citizens and Diaspora Organizations at the African Union Commission.

As an academic, he is visiting faculty at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Multilateral Diplomacy Program, and Diplo Foundation (www.diplomacy.edu), and previously Board Member of the Institute for Diplomatic Studies (1994-1996) and at the American University in Cairo (AUC) including the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP).

As an Egyptian diplomat, he rose to the rank Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security with diplomatic postings in Belgrade, New York, Geneva and Washington, DC. He previously served as Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for United Nations Affairs, member of the Cabinets of the Minister and First Undersecretary and the departments of multilateral political and economic issues. As an international civil servant, he was Strategic Advisor to the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement) in Addis Ababa

He held leading positions in multilateral negotiations and was member of the Egyptian delegations to several Summits and Ministerial Meetings of the UN, AU, LAS including their specialized agencies and regional commissions, and subsidiary bodies. He was also Coordinator of International Relations at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (2001-2003).

As a writer, he published some of the earliest analytical works in Arabic on ICTs and International Relations and continues to publish in the field of multilateral diplomacy, especially in issues related to international peace and security. In the last few years, Ambassador Aljowaily devoted more time to publishing books including “Serbia by Egyptian Eyes” (2018, 2019), and “Quote Unquote” a book of prose (2020, 2022) published in Arabic, English and Serbian.

Aljowaily holds a BA in Political Science and an MA in Middle East Studies from AUC, a MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a Post Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy from the University of Malta. He started his career in print and broadcast journalism as well as in research centers.
