Matt Bonham is co-director of the Maxwell/Newhouse Public Diplomacy Program at Syracuse University. From 1992 to 2008 he was director and chair of the International Relations Program in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Northwestern University and a Ph. D. in Political Science from M.I.T., where he concentrated in the field of international political communications. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley, the American University in Washington, DC, and MGIMO University in Moscow.
Matt’s research has focused on the problem of representing and comparing the cognitive maps of policy officials, and the use of such representations to develop computer models of foreign policy decision-making. His recent research has examined cultural factors in international communication as reflected in figurative language, such as metaphor and metonymy. He is currently conducting research on communicative aspects of the “War on Terrorism.”
Matt’s research has been published in International Studies Quarterly, International Studies Perspectives, and the Middle East Journal, as well as a number of anthologies. He has also presented more than 50 papers at international scholarly meetings. He has given presentations at the World Bank, United Nations, the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, as well as recent Annual Meetings of the American Political Science Association and the International Studies Association.
